NHL’s Freeway Series: how the OC and LA Register newspapers handled tonight’s playoff game

With the launch of the Los Angeles Register in mid April, we’ve really tried to keep the Orange County Register and Los Angeles Register feeling different, especially on the front pages and the local news sections.

But with the Ducks and Kings and facing off in the second round of the NHL playoffs tonight, the papers look fairly similar for the first time. Except for the headlines. 🙂

Both newspapers’ A sections included one of Charles Apple’s great “Focus” pages:

And the first four pages of both newspapers’ sports sections were basically the same this morning (with the super-fun Kurt Snibbe illustration):

All of these stories can be found online here:

(And, yes, I know that URL is totally bizarre. Our online publishing system is what it is.)

Earlier this week, when both newspapers were dealing with the news surrounding the Clippers, the papers had different takes on the story:

We’ve put a lot of effort in trying to keep the LA and OC Registers feeling unique, but the Ducks-Kings match-up was a natural opportunity to give all of our readers a lot of cool stories, photos, illustrations and analysis. Still, I wouldn’t count on the rest of the coverage/play being too similar for the rest of the series.

Then, we have Dodgers/Angels again in August!
